Have you ever heard about the different attachment styles and how they affect ALL relationships in your life and your capacity to bond?

Attachment styles refer to patterns of behavior that people use to form and maintain relationships, particularly in terms of their emotional attachment to others. They begin to form in early childhood and are influenced by the relationships we have with our primary caregivers. These styles affect how we relate to others throughout our lives, including in romantic relationships, friendships, and professional interactions.

There are four main attachment styles:

Individuals with a secure attachment style tend to have a positive view of themselves and their relationships. They feel comfortable with intimacy and independence, balancing the two in their relationships. Securely attached people are often open and communicative with their partners, able to express their needs and feelings. They also tend to deal with rejection and conflict well, viewing them as part of life rather than catastrophic events.

People with an anxious-preoccupied attachment style often experience a negative view of themselves and a positive view of others. They may have a deep fear of abandonment and can become overly dependent on their partners for validation. Anxiously attached individuals tend to be very sensitive to their partner’s moods and actions and may require constant reassurance and attention. They might have a hard time feeling secure in their relationships, often fearing that their partner does not love them as much as they love their partner.

Those with a dismissive-avoidant attachment style typically have a positive view of themselves but a negative view of others. They value their independence to the point of avoiding emotional closeness, seeing it as a loss of self-sufficiency. They might avoid getting too close to others or withdraw emotionally when things start to become more intimate. Dismissive-avoidant individuals often prefer to keep their feelings and issues to themselves, not relying on others for emotional support.

Individuals with a fearful-avoidant attachment style have mixed feelings about close relationships. They desire emotional closeness but tend to avoid it due to fear of getting hurt. This attachment style is characterized by a negative view of both themselves and others, leading to a confusing push-and-pull behavior in relationships. People with this style might find it hard to trust others fully or to depend on them, often experiencing swings between closeness and distance.

Understanding your attachment style can offer valuable insights into your behavior in relationships and guide personal growth and healthier relationship patterns. Recognizing these patterns in others can also help in navigating interpersonal relationships more effectively.

With this understanding, together with Trauma Alchemy and Human Design, we can releasing  the unhealthy attachment styles created by painful/traumatic experiences (mostly) in childhood, metabolize the pain, slowly grow up and develop a secure attachment style, because this is the foundation for healthy relationships where our nervous system can feel safe and relaxed.
